When we first hear the Old Testament Reading, it sounds like we should politically align ourselves with the city of Jerusalem. But truly we are that city, together with all who call Jesus their Lord. With them (that is, the church) we find the joyous support we need in the face of daily struggle. Although Jerusalem is alive and well, too often we find disputes and conflicts. Doing good is hard work, and we are here to listen to our Lord’s encouragement and blessing. In the end, our results will be those of the Seventy-Two on their journey, for our Savior has already won the eternal battle. Today we come together to be strengthened in faith and sing out, “shout for joy to God, all the earth” (Psalm 66:1).
