Adam and Jesus are a study in contrasts. Where man in the Garden of Eden was weak before the devil’s wiles, Jesus returns the words of Satan with the Word of God. In so doing, He does not simply repeat words but expresses His trust and confidence in the Father. The Spirit led Jesus to the place of temptation knowing that Jesus knew what Adam forgot. Thanks be to God the error of Adam is not like the gift of God in Christ. What Adam lost, Christ won and not for Himself but for all who believe in Him. The family of sinners born with Adam’s sin is contrasted with the sons and daughters of righteousness born of Christ and His atoning work. Everyone suffers from Adam’s sin but only those who believe know the saving fruits of Christ’s holy obedience.
